September is a lovely month to enjoy the garden now it’s cooler. Rain showers will make the ground easier to work, so it’s a good time for planting.
Evergreen berry-bearing shrubs provide a backdrop of greenery year-round, with early flower displays followed by autumn berries. Firethorn or pyracantha is an evergreen shrub to train against walls and fences. Its thorny stems make it a great choice for producing secure garden boundaries. It provides nesting sites for birds, flowers that attract bees, and red, orange or yellow berries to feed birds into winter. Skimmia japonica subsp. reevesiana is a stunning compact shrub with bright red berries.
The cotoneaster is an attractive ornamental shrub with year-round appeal. Cotoneaster horizontalis has arching stems with herringbone-patterned stalks, making it a great choice for training up a fence.
