Herbaceous Perennials

This time of year, your borders and garden pots can look tired, especially in the midst of a hot summer. Choose some late varieties of herbaceous perennials to refresh your garden as it transitions from summer to autumn. Herbaceous perennials tend to be hardy and low maintenance, making them an easy choice. Some are evergreen, others die back and then reappear next spring.

Some of our favourite late-flowering perennials:

• Stonecrop, also known as Sedum Autumn Joy. It flowers in pink shades that turn russet in autumn, and it’s popular with pollinating insects.
• Aster, which likes a sunny position and looks good with ornamental grasses.
• Japanese anemone, which flowers from August through the autumn in sun or partial shade.
• Chrysanthemums in different shades.
