Gardening by Month - June

June is often considered the highlight of the gardening year, when gardens are bursting with colour and interest. Make the best of your outside space for the summer months stretching ahead.

Our Plant of the Month is the rose, so come and browse the selection, along with all the other gorgeous plants bursting into life this month. You could add some bee-friendly cottage plants or flowering herbs around the base of your rose to add interest and enhance the effect.

Bees love the purple blooms of lavender, which likes a sunny position in well-drained soil. Lavender is drought-tolerant, but keep it watered for its first season. Phlox is another bee-friendly plant. It helps create a lovely cottage garden effect in colours ranging from white and the softest shades of pink and lilac through to vibrant reds. It likes rich, moist soil, and a shady spot.

There’s still time to get into grow-your-own for freshly grown summer produce. If you don’t have much space, use a big container or planter filled with potting compost. Salad greens such as lettuce and spinach grow fast and can be harvested from seeds in just a few weeks. Buy a selection of herbs and position them in a sunny spot where you can grab a handful for cooking, salads or barbecues.

Leave out fresh water for birds and wildlife. Why not choose an ornamental bird bath to suit the style of your garden? You can also leave a bowl of water at ground level for passing wildlife to have a drink.

Garsons has everything you need to care for your summer garden. Let’s hope we have some glorious weather over the coming months. We look forward to welcoming you to the garden centre soon.
