Gardening by Month - November

The evenings are drawing in, but make the most of autumn and spend some time in the garden.

Why not choose some plants to give your garden a seasonal boost? Native hedges such as hazel, dogwood, hawthorn and birch help encourage a host of wildlife, bringing nature and diversity into your garden. Dogwood is particularly good for autumn colour, with stunning bare stems after its leaves have fallen.

Winter-flowering daphne is a favourite of the shrub world, and brings fragrance to your garden over the colder months. It has lovely scented flowers and attractive leaves that are often evergreen. Some have the added bonus of producing pink or white flowers in winter when little else is in flower.

The daphne likes well-drained soil in a sheltered spot. Position it in the front of the border, close to a path where you can make the most of its scent.

The wallflower is easy to grow for autumn colour. It has narrow, dark grey-green leaves and pretty, upright flowers in different shades. Plant it in full sun, sheltered from strong winds. After it has flowered, trim lightly to keep its rounded shape.
