Plant of the Month: June
Roses
Our June Plant of the Month is roses. They’re glorious in June, and with a little care, many varieties keep blooming well into autumn. The selection at Garsons includes roses that have won awards for beauty, fragrance or garden performance.
You can find a variety of rose to suit every sunny outdoor space, from the compact patio rose that can be grown in a pot, to a climbing or rambling rose that will adorn a trellis or wall. Tea roses, shrub roses and old-fashioned scented varieties range from bold and vibrant to delicate and nostalgic.
Tips for blooming good roses:
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Most roses like several hours of sunshine a day, but check the plant instructions so your chosen variety can thrive.
Dig a large planting hole and enrich it with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve drainage and provide nutrients.
Give the plant a good soak before removing it from its pot and planting it in the garden or a container. Remember to firm the soil around it and water it in.
Keep your new addition watered for the first season to help it become established. Water it deeply two or three times a week at the base rather than from overhead.
Established roses appreciate a rose fertiliser to promote and prolong flowering. Follow the instructions on the label.
Deadheading the blooms will help them keep flowering. Some types will flower until autumn. You can leave the old-fashioned types as these often form hips that provide autumn colour.
Prune the rose shrub in the autumn, reducing it by at least a third, and it will come back to life next year. Patio roses don’t need to be pruned; just snip off any dead branches.
Roses can be susceptible to pests and diseases, but if you treat any problems, they can still bloom healthily for years to come. Garsons has organic pet, wildlife and child-friendly pest control options available. You can ask for advice in the garden centre.
