Plant of the Month: June

Roses

It’s rose season from now until late autumn. June and July is the time to enjoy roses at their best, so make the most of them. Garsons has plenty of fantastic varieties to suit every size of outdoor space.

A scented rose with beautiful blooms is a heady combination. Enjoy the perfume from a dainty rose in a pot on your patio or doorstep, a shrub planted in your garden, or from an old-fashioned rose trailing up a structure.

Climbing roses are lovely for summer colour and perfume, with colours to suit all tastes. They look stunning trained over an arch or pergola and can also scramble up a garden fence or wall.

The patio rose is an ideal container plant since it’s neat and compact. Some are fragranced, and they will bloom profusely through the summer. Place it where you can enjoy the fragrance, particularly on a warm evening when the perfume is strongest. They make a long-lasting gift.

Whatever rose you choose, position it in a sunny spot. If you’re planting a rose in the garden, go for a shrub rose, a traditional hybrid tea rose, or a climbing rose. Make sure it’s kept watered if in a container or until it becomes established in the ground.

With a little care, roses flower for a surprisingly long time. They peak during the summer and can keep going until it turns cold in late autumn, making them a wonderful addition to the garden.

Deadhead your roses through the flowering season to keep them blooming. For best results, simply snap off the dead head without removing any leaves.
Leave the old-fashioned types as these can form hips for autumn colour.

If you already have roses, get them in good shape for the coming season. A liquid rose feed early this month and then another in July will promote and prolong flowering. Follow the instructions for the type of feed you have chosen. Roses are easy to care for, but look out for blackspot and rust aphids. Spray with a general rose pesticide, or ask for advice in the garden centre.

Be inspired by the selection at Garsons and celebrate the summer ahead with roses. They can give you stunning blooms year after year, making them fantastic value, especially when there’s 20% off the range this month for Garsons card holders.
