Plant of the Month: April
Herbs
Spring is here and it’s a great time to plan your herb garden for the summer. Our plants of the month are herbs, so Garsons card holders can receive 20% off the herb range in the garden centre throughout April.
With a little care, you can have a thriving selection of herbs for fresh-picked flavour. Think about which ones you like for cooking or to add an extra something to salads and summer drinks. How about Pimm’s with mint leaves, or a mocktail with an aromatic sprig of rosemary or thyme?
Choose a sunny spot for your herbs, with good drainage and fertile soil. Consider creating a raised bed, which adds height and interest as well as making your herbs easier to pick. Give them enough space to grow as they like to spread out and create a strong root system. If you only have a small space, use a collection of pots. Basil likes warm, sunny conditions, so you can grow it on a windowsill.
Chives, mint, thyme and parsley are all easy to grow. Thyme likes full sun and the others prefer partial shade. Mint can take over so is best to grow in a separate container. Choose herbs that give added value by producing flowers or a gorgeous aroma. Aromatic herbs include thyme and rosemary, both of which have small, delicate flowers that attract bees.
Water your herbs regularly, but allow them to dry out between waterings. Prune them to encourage a nice bushy shape. Herbs in your garden can look good, smell divine and taste delicious, so it’s well worth making space for them.
